Start at 59th st Columbus Circle (the statue at the center is the point at which distances to and from NYC are officially measured). Visit the Time Warner building with a four-story retail mall (Whole foods Market in the basement, Crabtree & Evelyn, MXYPLYZYK, Bouchon Bakery. For a hot chocolate with a magnificent! view, visit the Mandarin Oriental Lobby lounge (35th floor, $$), and for some great jazz with a view you must go the Lincoln center (Allen room, Atrium, Dizzy's Club with every Thursday After Hours at 11pm, $5 for cover/menu/drinks).
After your visit to the Time Warner center you can either walk or take the subway to Verdi's square (Broadway & W 72nd). The old subway building here was used in Die Hard with a vengeance. And the little park here was used in the film You've got mail. Near Verdi's square you'll find Urban outfitters and Gray's Papaya (hot dogs & tropical drinks - good, cheap, no seats, cash only) For some great hot chocolate or yummie chocolate chip cookies walk a little up Amsterdam ave (Jaques Torres & Levain Bakery @ 74th). If you want you can take a quick detour to Alice Tea cup (a wonderfull little tearoom annex shop at Columbus & 73rd) and Maya Shraper cheese and antique (?!?) store from the front was used for Meg Ryan's bookstore in You've Got mail.
Without the detour, walk or take the subway (not too much worth visiting in between) to Broadway and 79th. Walk a litte up Broadway for Filenes basement, H&H bagels, Zabar's and a Barnes & Nobles bookstore. Turn to right and walk towards Central Park for a great visit to the Turtle Pond, Delacorte Theatre and the Obelisk at the MET, ... (more from this in my next post)
